Best instant film cameras: Trendy printable memories at your fingertips

Although most people have a smartphone with the ability to take endless high-quality photos, many are now returning to the style of photography their grandparents and parents used: instant film cameras.

While we are able to take digital photos from our phones, it is not possible to display physical photos in real life. Real film cameras are more cumbersome to transport and require a higher learning curve to use correctly. They also require you to bring your film to get developed, and then (*gasp*) wait Days Before you can pick up your physical photos and take them home, Even for simple digital cameras with point-and-shoot capabilities, you still have to upload your photos online so they can be printed by Shutterfly (aka Continue reading waiting).

It makes perfect sense in an instant-gratification world, where everything is about instant gratification. Instant film cameras allow you to take a picture from point to print to point in seconds.

What is an instant film camera? How does it work?

An instant film camera is simply a camera that has an internal developing studio. This allows instant film to be developed using all of the available mechanisms. This instant film camera must be equipped with self-developing films. This eliminates the need to bring the film somewhere where it can be developed. With simple buttons and minimal features, instant film cameras can be used by beginners with little to no experience.

In more technical terms, the self-developing film in an instant camera typically contains several layers sandwiched together — with dye, developer, etc. — which contain all the necessary chemicals for the photo development process. The layers are laid in such a way that the chemical reaction is initiated when you take a photo and tell your camera to print it. After the print is taken, you will need to wait for the image to develop fully before ejecting it from the camera.

The Polaroid camera was the first and most well-known instant film camera. Most people refer to instant film cameras, and the resulting photographs, as “Polaroids”, regardless of which camera brand they are. Today’s Polaroid cameras have a lot more technology than in the past. Original Polaroids took over 15 minutes to develop, and photos created by competitors are developed much faster than the original.

What kinds of instant film cameras do you have?

Fujifilm is one of these competitors. With a wide range of instant film cameras, Instax cameras dominate the market. However, regardless of brand, instant film cameras all work the same, although there are variations in creative control (e.g., adjustable exposure and interchangeable lenses). Remember that instant film cameras can use rechargeable USB cables, but some are powered by replaceable batteries.

However, the largest difference between instant film cameras is the sizes of the photos they print. Instax’s film range includes sizes from small to large, square to large. There are also other brands like Polaroid or some Kodak cameras that can print a classic Polaroid-style photograph that is slightly larger than the Instax film lineup.

Also, some instant film cameras allow for you to view your picture before printing. This ensures that you only print the photos you love. Others, however, automatically print every picture you snap — even if you blinked or got photobombed or just didn’t look as Immaculate You can do what you want. (Though there is definitely something to be said for capturing moments exactly as they happen, unfiltered and unedited — like the tangible equivalent of BeReal.)

Is instant film too expensive?

It’s worth noting that instant film can become quite costly depending on which camera model you have. Each instant camera brand typically only works with its own brand of instant film — and in the case of the Instax line, the film specifications narrow even further. Instax Minis can’t use Instax Square films, and vice versa.

Although some brands are more expensive than others in the end, you can generally expect to pay around fifty to sixty cents per image. Buying multiple film packs in bulk, however, will bring that cost down significantly — as long as you know this is a hobby you’ll keep up for a while. Remember that instant film can run out! Don’t expect to get too crazy with bulk film packs.

Some instant films have adhesive on the back that allows you to stick printed photos onto the film. Some instant films allow the photo to be printed from one edge to the other, while others require that the border be white like Polaroid cameras photos. If you are looking for something a little more fancy, instant film can be printed with colorful bordersLike this Instax film in rainbow colors(opens in new tab)) — though that’ll cost you more per photo.
